History of Event:
The event is a celebration for Chicana/o Latina/o graduating seniors and for any graduating
students who wish to participate. The goal is to acknowledge students and their families'
support during the educational journey. It is open to all students; and the event
is bilingual to reflect the cultural values of the Raza community. At the event, students
will receive recognition alongside two guest (parents or relatives typically). This
event primarily celebrates cultural diversity and educational empowerment, which is
part of the CI Mission.
Given the historically low college graduation rates nationally for Chicana/o Latina/o
students, attaining a higher education is truly something to celebrate. That CI is
a "Hispanic Serving Institution" means that there is a large student population that
is Chicana/o Latina/o. In addition, these students are primarily first generation
college students. These events create inspiration for our community while acknowledging
that there is much work to be done to create equities in education. Most college campuses
have a similar celebration already established. This will be the 8th year that ChiLFASA
de CI hosts such an event for our students and their families.
