Drought Awareness

Statewide mandatory water reductions, directed by Governor Jerry Brown in April 2015, continue and California remains in a drought. Every urban water supplier was ranked for a reduction requirement and Camrosa Water District, which supplies water to CI, was placed into a category requiring a reduction potable (drinking) water by 32% relative to 2013. As of June 2016, we are only down 5%.
CI is already saving water with these practices:
- Turning off and keeping the fountains drained
- Watering landscape with recycled water
- Converting grass areas to planters covered in mulch, enhanced with drought resistant plants
- Cutting back up to 50% on watering on remaining turf areas
- Installed low-water-use fixtures such as 1.6 and 1.28 gallon-per-flush toilets, waterless urinals, and low flow aerators on sink faucets and shower heads
Other practices to help reduce the water use on campus and at home include:
- Turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth, shave, or wash your hands
- Only washing full loads of laundry and dishes
- Trying to keep your showers to no more than 5 minutes
- Waiting longer between car washes, and using a facility that recycles the water
