Jan. 20, 2022

Dear Faculty and Staff:

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague, Joe Jacquez, on Jan. 12, 2022. Joe worked for from May 2013 through August 2017 as a temporary Facility Worker who assisted with summer and short-term projects and eventually joined the Facilities Services team as a permanent Custodian on Sept. 1, 2017.  Joe worked in University Hall and Housing & Residential Education prior to moving over to the Student Union building.

Our Housing & Residential Education and Associated Students Incorporated colleagues shared that Joe was a “friendly, kindhearted individual,” and they will “miss his bright good morning welcomes, where we laughed together and talked about time spent with family.” As he interacted with students, he frequently reminded them to “stay in school.”

On a personal note, I met Joe shortly after my official appointment as Interim President last January. I’d see Joe bright and early every morning as I walked into University Hall, where he was always grooving to some good music as he worked. We’d spend a few minutes catching up, swapping stories about kids and grandkids, and we’d wish each other good energy for the day ahead. I have so much appreciation for those daily interactions, and this was especially true during the first days and weeks of my Interim Presidency – where Joe’s warmth and welcoming nature helped ease some of my stresses and tensions about our leadership transition. And his support only continued to grow as the year progressed.

extends our most sincere condolences to Joe’s family, friends and colleagues, as he will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I was able to talk with Joe’s wife of 44 years, Diana, earlier today. She shared how much Joe loved being a part of , and that she is thankful for the outpouring of support from our campus community.

Joe’s service details are below, and his family and friends have also established a account to help with funeral expenses:

Perez Family Funeral Home ()

Sincerely,
Richard Yao, Ph.D.
Interim President
