At CSU Channel Islands, the role of advising is shared by faculty advisors and professional academic advisors. Academic advising is a continuous process that supports students throughout their academic journey at the University. Students are ultimately responsible for their educational planning and meeting all graduation requirements. Students need to be familiar with the University Catalog policies, as well as major and degree policies. In order to ensure academic success and remain on course, students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with academic and faculty advisors.

Students may stop by the Advising Center check-in counter to schedule an appointment with one of our professional academic advisors. Academic advisors are busiest during registration periods and the first few weeks of the semester. Therefore, students are encouraged to schedule advising sessions during the non-peak times. Major faculty advisors are available on a walk-in basis or by appointment. Each semester, office locations, hours and phone numbers of major faculty advisors are posted in the display case outside the Advising Center.

New Transfer Students

Students will receive information about advising workshops, registration procedures, and Island View Orientation by invitation after officially being admitted to the University.??At 华体会, a student鈥檚 first experience with academic advisors will take place through group advisement workshops. All newly admitted transfer students will be invited to attend a new student advisement workshop. Workshops will be offered for each major, but general workshops will also be offered for students unable to attend the scheduled workshop for their particular major. The following dates are scheduled for advisement workshops:

January 7 - 11听听

Workshops will include information about how advising takes place at 华体会, as well as information about general education, graduation and major requirements. Advisors will provide assistance for interpreting the University catalog, schedule of classes and will provide helpful tips for first semester course planning. Students will receive important materials such as major checklists, the class schedule, articulation agreements and the University Catalog. During the workshop students will receive registration procedures and instructions for registering on-line.??Once students receive their invitation and pre-advising guide from the Advising Center, they need to RSVP at 437-8971.听听

Transfer students are encouraged to attend a special Island View Orientation for transfer students coordinated by the Division of Student Affairs. Students will receive additional information regarding Island View Orientation from Orientation Programs. Questions can be directed to the Student Leadership and Community office at 437-8998.听听

Transfer Student Registration

After attending a new student advisement workshop, students will register on-line. On-line registration begins January 11, 2008 and continues through January 15, 2008.听听

Registration Assistance听听

After attending an advising workshop, students experiencing difficulty with course scheduling or course selection may contact the Advising Center at 805-437-8571 for assistance. Students experiencing technical difficulties with on-line registration may contact the Information Technology department at 805-437-8552.听听

New Freshman Students听听

Advising and registration take place for freshman students at Island View Orientation. In these sessions, you will have the opportunity to:

• Learn about academic requirements and policies
• Develop a class schedule with our professional academic advisors
• Register for classes

Island View Orientation (Transfer and Freshman Students)听听

Freshman students and transfer students will be invited to attend Island View Orientation on the following date: January 18, 2008

At Island View Orientation students will:

• Discover ways in which to effectively transition into the curricular and co-curricular environments of 华体会;
• Receive information regarding a variety of student support services (counseling, career, disability accommodations, etc) and campus life (recreation, student life, clubs and organizations, etc);
• Tour the campus and learn necessary information about the library;
• Learn about opportunities on campus such as service learning, study abroad, and other academic support services;
• Receive our CSU Channel Islands student ID card and parking pass; and
• Receive CSU Channel Islands T-shirt and gift bag.

Faculty Advisors

Systemwide Placement Test Requirements

The California State University requires each entering undergraduate, except those who qualify for an exemption, to take the CSU Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) examination and the CSU English Placement Test (EPT) prior to enrollment. These placement tests are not a condition for admission to the CSU, but they are a condition of enrollment. They are designed to identify entering students who may need additional support in acquiring the basic English and mathematics skills necessary to succeed in CSU baccalaureate-level courses.聽

Undergraduate students who do not demonstrate college-level skills in mathematics will be placed in appropriate remedial programs and activities during the first term of their enrollment. Students placed in such programs in mathematics must complete all remediation in their first year of enrollment. Failure to complete remediation by the end of the first year may result in denial of enrollment for future terms. Students register for the EPT and/or ELM at their local CSU campus. Directed Self Placement (DSP)

Directed self placement will be the only method used on the CSU Channel Islands campus to place students into freshman composition courses. EPT scores will not be used. Students will be given guidance in directed self placement during orientation and will select either English 105, Composition and Rhetoric, or the English 102/103 Stretch Composition sequence. Completion of either English 105 or English 102/103 satisfies the freshman writing requirement.听听

University Math and Writing Center

The University Math and Writing Center is currently located in Bell Tower 1512. A move to the Library is planned for the Spring 2008 Semester. Please check the display at the Center or contact Juliette Cook at 805-437-8409 for current schedules and other information.听听

At the Math Center, the process is collaborative. Tutors work with students to encourage effective, independent learning, and to further knowledge and understanding during their education at CSU Channel Islands. Math tutors are available to accommodate students鈥� needs, whether one desires help completing homework, studying for a test, or just understanding a concept. They are able to consult in virtually every math course offered on this campus, and their specialties are posted in front of the lab.听听

The University Writing and Multiliteracy Center is currently located in BT 1512, but look for us in spring 2008 in the north wing of the Broome Library of the second floor. Our mission is to support all members of the 华体会 community with their writing at any stage of the composing process. Our trained peer writing consultants can assist students with academic projects, helping them to understand and brainstorm their paper assignments, organize their essays based on a thoughtfully constructed main idea, develop and document their ideas, and learn to polish and edit their own papers. We offer a learning resource, not an editing service. Students are also welcome to bring in other types of written work, such as r茅sum茅s and letters of application. The Writing Center鈥檚 services are free of charge. The Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 - 2:00 p.m..
